As other reviews have pointed out, this hotel is under heavy renovations. The room we had was probably 80% completed, but the tub was a complete mess. But we were aware of the renovations and the “dust” didn’t bother us.
The 2 frustrating parts were related to timing. We were given a ground floor room with a window a few feet away from where the construction workers were working and they started loudly doing their thing at 6 a.m. on a weekend day where we were going to sleep in. Not ideal. Then, at 11:00 the maid began pounding on the door and informed us we were past checkout time. The Wingate website clearly says 12:00. They need to get on the same page with their policies.
Those problems aside, it appeared that this hotel will probably be acceptable enough when the work is finished. If the price is right and you’re not picky, it’s probably just fine.
Hotel is showing age and needs renovation. I was a little disappointed in the condition based on the price we paid. Furnishings were scratched, marred and stained. Walls were cracked, dented and marked. Shower tile grout had plenty of mildew. Drain in the bathroom sink was rusty from a constant water drip. The worst part… the room had that old, musty smell that gets into your clothes and luggage. Looby and pool were nice and well kept, however. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Good location, but I doubt I would stay here again until a renovation is complete.
We had to go to Birmingham and chose to stay at this motel. We got a great price through AAA. Our first room had some issues, and we reported it to the staff. They only had a suite left and bumped us up for the same price. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Breakfast the next morning was very good. We would stay there again.
The room is adequate and serves it’s purpose; it’s nothing fancy, but it’s also not too shabby. The courtesy guest that checked me in was personable and friendly. That being said, my room faced the back side of the hotel and I was awoken several times in the night by loud talking and laughter coming from the back parking lot. I genuinely thought there was some type of party going on. It is unclear to me if these were employees or if they were guests; nevertheless this occurred several times throughout the night and into the wee hours of the morning. If these were employees partying and playing around in the back parking lot, they clearly don’t value their guests. If it was other guests who were carrying on without giving any thought to those who may be in earshot of their awful noise, the front desk would have had to have heard them (considering I was on the second floor and could clearly identify their conversations) and should have respectfully asked them to keep the peace. It should have been handled before ANY guest was awoken. My intention was to address the issue with the front desk employee at check out, but was distracted when I had to scavenge the grounds to find any employee who could man the vacant front desk and help me. I’m very disappointed in my stay here and will be staying elsewhere for all future Birmingham stays.
We had many problems here but hopefully won’t be experienced by everyone. The place was under renovation and really should have been closed until completed. The lobby was under yellow-tape with torn up floors. Our room was pre-update and had a broken lamp and a non-working telephone, neither of which were corrected while we were there despite our reports. Again, once the work is completed this should not be an issue but you should check with the desk before booking. The other issue was that were first double-charged and in the process of correcting that the hotel charged us a 3rd time. In the end it was all settled but it took 3 weeks from when we first checked in and also mainly because we did not give up.
