The Sloop – Restaurants and Fast Food in Alabama

The Sloop is a historical sailing vessel often associated with maritime exploration, trade, and colonial endeavors. It typically refers to a type of lightly built ship, easily propelled and maneuverable, commonly used from the 17th to the 19th centuries. With a shallow draft, the sloop allows for river navigation and coastal operations. Renowned for its speed and flexibility, the sloop played a pivotal role in naval history, particularly in privateering, exploration, and in laying the groundwork for naval strategies. Today, the legacy of the sloop lives on as a symbol of seafaring excellence, reclaimed by historians and maritime enthusiasts alike. 1. We were in town for 5 nights, and went here 3 of those nights. We asked a bartender at a big beach restaurant where she likes to go and she immediately said The Sloop. It’s worth getting away from the tourist crowds/prices. Inside is a bar and tables, and there is an outside area to sit on the deck, or on beach chairs in a comfortable beach-like setting out back. Bathrooms were immaculate. Some nights there is live music on a cute stage outside.
Food was great. I’m from NJ originally, and the cheese steak was on point, as was the meatball sandwich, and the sausage and peppers sandwich. All great! So glad we stopped here. Can be tricky to find the first time, but with Maps you’ll be good.

  2. This place came highly recommended through various places (locals and Facebook). It’s a small space that can get loud (which doesn’t bother me) and gives it the dive bar feel. Our food was hot but lacked flavor we both ordered cheesesteak and were slightly disappointed. It was just meat and cheese on bread. The chips were house made but again (for us) lacked flavor. The shrimp app was great though! I will try again since my experience is based on one time and may have been just an off experience. The place was packed so they are doing something right!

  3. To each their own but I didn’t like this place much at all. It’s pretty much a gathering of people screaming at the top of their lungs in an echoing small building. The cheesesteak was super over-hyped. It was mediocre at best. Chips were bland. No refill on my drink. I personally wouldn’t go back but a lot of people like this place so maybe it was an off day.

  4. If you’re looking for the best cheesesteak sandwich around, you need to pay this place a visit. They offer it with provolone, American, or Philly style with cheese whiz. Their homemade kettle chips pair perfectly with it, too. It’s not a big place, so depending on when you arrive, you may have a wait. They seem to stay busy. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. However, there is not a lot available outdoor seating. The sailing theme is clever and entertaining. This place has become one of our favorites when visiting Gulf Shores.
