If you can afford the upfront cost, an experience at this restaurant is worth every cent. They say that a 3 Michelin Star status means it’s something worth planning your entire trip around, and that’s exactly what we did, with no regrets looking back.
The attentiveness and consideration of service here is unmatched. Our party was moved to a private dining room since they had the availability, and that elevated the experience even more. Their tasting menu is portioned perfectly, and of course each dish had a great blend of flavors and picturesque presentation.
I’ve tried a handful of tasting menu style dining experiences before, and while they were all generally excellent I could still find small nitpicks from portion sizes to pacing to taste and quality. When it comes to The French Laundry, my experience here has far outshone the rest and I genuinely cannot name a single negative aspect.
Everything about The French Laundry was amazing. We attended during the week of their 30th anniversary special. Every single course was delicious and I was left in awe of the culinary perfection. The meal was delicious and I left properly full and satisfied. The freshness of their truffles was unreal. The oysters and pearls were my favorite item on the menu. The staff were great too. They were attentive to all details. The meal tempo was also perfectly paced. This place is worth every penny and their 3 Michelin stars. I would highly recommend!
This dinner… Truly cannot be encapsulated with a few simple paragraphs. To say that it was a masterpiece would be to undersell the experience. It was by far the best experience I have ever had in a restaurant and one of the best experiences of my life. We flew out for my 50th birthday and decided that we would hit all the Thomas Keller restaurants and properties in 48 hours.
Every experience was amazing but this was the crown Jewel. The staff are warm and funny and attentive. If you joke with them they will joke back. Since it was my 50th our waiter was kind enough to get Thomas Keller to sign the menu. We had an outside table and after dinner toured the kitchen and then moved on to the smoking area for cigars.
The entire experience took 5 hours and it was a whirlwind. Honestly it was the fastest best 5 hours of my life. At the end they gifted me a bottle of wine that was etched with the logo and happy 50th birthday.
I can’t imagine anything as amazing as this. Every tiny extra detail was simply perfect. I was honestly choked up at the end. I was expecting perfection and I was still just blown away. Thomas Keller is my hero.
I hope I get to go back!
It’s hard for a place that’s so hyped up to live up to the hype. What I found pleasant were all the little details. To start, the walk through the kitchen and wine cellar prior to sitting down is pretty stellar. Loved that the staff didn’t skip a beat when we came into the kitchen and the collection of old wine was impressive. In terms of service, they nailed all the dietary restrictions leading up to the meal. What stood out was the balance of attentiveness without being overbearing. Staff was polite in keeping our glasses full, but never pushy. Impressively, a group of staff come out and clear our plates only when the entire party has finished. Not an easy task when you’re serving 12 folks at once. The sommelier dealt with the impossible task of picking something he thought we’d like, but still keeping in mind the relative budget I had mentioned leading up to the dinner. In this case he picked a ‘94 Bordeaux that blew us away. I highly recommend some of their older bottles. As for the food, oysters and pearls lived up to the hype. A surprisingly pleasant combination of tapioca, caviar, and oysters. The salad was refreshing in that it was simultaneously hearty because of the cracked wheat yet light due to the garden selection. My favorite of the night was the abalone because of the complex and thoughtful combination with an eggplant reduction and radish. I opted for the wagyu which I could eloquently describe as meat butter that had a perfect charcoal sear. Finally, the smattering of desserts knocked me off of my feet and I’m not even a sweets guy. It’s hard for me to find room for improvement but if I had to, I would recommend they not use as strong mustard notes on the mushroom base that goes with the wagyu pairing. However, the chanterelle made up for it. I also thought the pretzel and cheese item was nothing extraordinary. We never felt rushed to close out the dinner and the parting details were a nice touch to make it memorable. It’s hard for such a place renowned for fine dining to come off as relaxed and approachable and French Laundry felt exactly that way. While the food originally drew me in and seemed like the fireworks, it was the staff and attention to little details that really blew me away. Kudos.
The most OVERRATED restaurant. I can’t believe this holds a Michelin star, let alone THREE. There was not one memorable dish form the evening. The food lacked in creativity and was all one note in flavor. There was nothing special about this restaurant other than the absurd cost (over $400 per person) for an underwhelming meal. The service was good but there was no story behind the menu, there was no presentation of the dishes other than what the ingredients were. After dining in several Michelin starred restaurants (including other 3 stars), I wouldn’t give this restaurant a nod. Don’t waste your time or your money going here. Not worth the hype. When you’re in Napa try another spot.
