The Donatello – Hotels and Resorts in California

The Donatello is one of the most famous Italian Renaissance sculptors, known for his innovative works that combined classical themes with the personal touch of the era. Born around 1430 in Florence, he dedicated his life to creating a range of sculptures from marble to bronze. His style, marked by a lifelike realism and considerable emotional expression, made him stand out among his contemporaries.

Donatello’s most notable works include the bronze statue of David, one of the earliest known freestanding nude statues made since antiquity, and the terracotta statue of the Pietà. The David sculpture broke conventions by depicting the biblical hero as a youthful and muscular figure with a confident pose rather than a triumphant hero, and it exemplified the humanistic ideals of the Renaissance.

Though Donatello never traveled much, his twenty-three surviving sculptures and many known sketches capture the advancements in human understanding and the spirit of the Renaissance. His works helped set the stage for subsequent artists, like Michelangelo. Donatello’s influence is still evident today, and his pieces are valued for their contribution to art history.

  1. I stayed here in February and write now because, after many subsequent stays at other properties, I remain nostalgic about my time at the Donatello. The team was very cheerful and welcoming. The room was large for San Francisco and had everything I needed. The hotel itself was quiet, as were the other guests. There is street noise as one would expect but it was not an issue for me. It was fantastic to have the sofa and seating area as well as the kitchen space with utensils. The bed was very comfortable. I also liked that the big closet and roomy chest of drawers were in a separate area with a full length mirror for a nice dressing area away from the living space. Going up to the lounge to grab a cup of tea in the evening – and get some SF intel from the friendly hostess – was a treat. Every day I felt like I was coming home to my own condo.

  2. This wasn’t our first choice hotel but due to the lack of availability of any decent hotel we had to stay here.
We stayed two nights and didn’t eat or drink at the hotel.

Overall the hotel is fine. The location is a bit sketchy but central and near Union Square and not far from BART and other transit options.

The decor is dated but in general okay.

My main complaint is the timeshare sales after check-in. I’m not sure if this is common in America but I’ve never experienced it and after a long flight the last thing I want to do is dodge a skilled salesman (who was polite, professional and helpful to be fair). All I want is to get my key and go to my room.

This wasn’t mentioned on hotels.com where I booked through and had I known I would have not come.

  3. This is nice lodging close to public transportation, but on the edge of sketchiness. The staff is so friendly and helpful, which I should know because I had to call maintenance several times with issues about my hot room. (Thermostat set on 67, but room stayed a constant 76 degrees or more. I finally gave up.) For a large building, the fitness room is wholly inadequate. Most mornings I had to leave because it only comfortably accommodates 2-3 people. It is tiny. There is only one bench, a few aerobic machines, and a rack of weights, a dismal disappointment. Obviously, working out is not a priority when in SF, but a nice fitness room is always a bonus (and a factor in why I chose this place). So with my hot room and no ability to work out, probably won’t return.

  4. It was my first time in San Francisco and booked The Donatello thru timeshare! Pictures on timeshare needs to be updated because rooms were spacious, beautiful and did not expect kitchenette! Location, staff service & rooms were excellent and would stay again or recommend. My only negative comment is to have 2 queen or 2 double bed options!

  5. I loved the Donatello! It was safe it was comfortable and the staff went above and beyond. The Italian restaurant in the Hotel is amazing! The food omg! The drinks everything was on point. I was able to valet my car my whole stay. I would highly recommend❤️❤️❤️
