Piggly Wiggly – Grocery in Alabama

Piggly Wiggly, established in 1916 in Midville, Alabama, is considered the world’s first self-service grocery store. Innovating the retail food industry, George and Clarence Woodruff founded the company who introduced shopping via carts, separate checkout lanes for different types of purchases, and Instore Food-Service À La Carte. Their pioneering concepts have shaped modern supermarkets, making them one of the key historical figures in retail food sales transformation. The company’s influence persists today as it transitioned into Piggly Wiggly Food Stores, Inc. Despite facing financial struggles and multiple bankruptcies in the late 20th century, it remains a cherished name, symbolizing progress in consumer shopping options.

  1. I recently visited Piggly Wiggly and had a mixed experience. While most of the cashiers were efficient and friendly, I encountered one cashier who seemed quite disinterested and slow in processing transactions. This lack of enthusiasm did affect my overall impression of the store’s service quality. I hope Piggly Wiggly addresses this issue to ensure consistent and pleasant shopping experiences for all customers.

  2. Customer service could have been a little bit better. The chicken is good it was hot and fresh they were just bringing it out!

I have never gotten the chicken and been disappointed. You cannot beat the price of an 8-piece dark $3.99!

  3. I went here a few days ago and wanted to love it. It is employee owned which means money is staying in the community. UNFORTUNATELY, this did not work out as I hoped. Upon picking up a lovely package of steaks; to my shock, there was a big black hair clearly across the center front of the package. If the did not see it during packaging and they did not see it while placing it in the sales cooler, what else are they not seeing? I left disappointed.
