  1. I rarely write negative reviews, and perhaps this isn’t truly “bad.” I’m simply sharing my experience at the Microtel in Gulf Shores.

On check-in day, we were neither greeted nor welcomed. The desk clerk barely spoke and looked as though she would rather be anywhere else. There was a mix-up with my room, but I will say they resolved it without issue.

Our room was in the second building. The foyer smelled heavily of perfume, which I believe was to cover up the musty smell in the rest of the hotel. The humidity was palpable throughout the building. Our room was also musty and humid. We had to crank down the AC, which made it more bearable after a few days. While the floors were clean, there were obvious stains in some areas. The bathroom showed signs of water damage, the tub would fill up while taking a shower because it would not drain, and it dripped continuously. The lights flickered often throughout the night. During our five-day stay, our room was not cleaned, nor were our sheets changed. We knew someone had entered the room each day because fresh towels were provided. On the fourth day, we were frustratingly locked out of the room.

Overall, I probably won’t return. I certainly would not pay peak season prices for this room. I might consider staying if it were my last option and the rate was no more than $100 per night. The location is its only draw.

  2. I stayed here a week ago because it was on the cheaper side, and i liked the location. When we arrived, our room was pretty nasty. it seemed as if they had just put new bedding in there. there were splashes of unknown colored liquids on the walls, stickiness everywhere, the carpet had not been vacuumed, there were mildew on the trim, and the bathtub had globs of dried glue. It also didn’t smell clean. we stayed in that room the first night, but the next morning we went to the front desk to address it. the lady there was very nice and she said she was embarrassed. she was very apologetic, and explained that where we were (the second floor of the second building), the cleaners couldn’t communicate with them because of a language barrier, and they’ve had complaints before. she offered us a new room, and we took it. our new room was WAY better. clean everywhere, smelled clean. i have no legitimate complaints about the second room we received. although, other workers and cleaners who waited and watched while we moved rooms, seemed annoyed. the breakfast served downstairs was also just snack food besides pancakes you can make yourself. my final “complaint” would be the pool. besides it being pretty small for the size of the hotel (it can fit about one family at a time), it did not feel or look clean. the water had a film over the top at all times, and seemed stagnant. there was also algae growing on the steps. it was murky and you could not see your feet at the bottom of the pool. there were also no pool times posted on the sign (they left it blank), so we had to ask, and the worker we asked was rude. there would be people swimming late at night, so one night we swam, and at 10:10 PM, a worker came down and told us it closes at 10, and she waited and stared impatiently while we got dressed. we told her thank you, and she did not even respond. I give this hotel an overall 3, because our second room was fine, there were no safety issues we ran into, and it was just an “okay” place to stay. i thank the front desk worker who actually had hospitality!
just to add, i own an airbnb, and would never leave a false or out-of-line review.

  3. DO NOT STAY HERE. I never leave a review but this place was horrible nothing like the pictures inside. The two Jamaican ladies at the front desk customer service was horrible. As you walk in they look at you, don’t greet you back or anything. I said hello, the one with the gap didn’t even speak just staring me up & down with an ugly mug on her face. The rooms are outdated & nasty. Well the first room we was placed in was terrible! Dirt on the floor, sheets balled up on the bed, paint peeling off the walls, all the appliance is rusty & disgusting. The A/C leak on the floor & have the carpet wet. She said she placed us in a newly renovated room. When she double checked realized she didn’t. This new room is not much better. The toilet is coming up. This is terrible for $285 per night.

  4. Pleasantly surprised with the room and location. Room was nice and clean. There is construction in the area but more than one way to get in and out of the facility. It’s an easy drive down to the beach or back up to Foley.

  5. Every staff member I spoke with was incredibly nice, patient, and helpful with information about the local attractions. I needed a handicapped seat for the shower and it was delivered to my room within 20 minutes of our arrival. I asked someone in the hallway for extra towels and they got to my room within 5 minutes. At about 1am I called the desk to ask about receiving a Do Not Disturb sign and they told me I could run to the front desk to grab one the next morning. I didn’t have to. When I left my room the next morning the sign was already on the door.
A young man working there even helped me out with a ponytail holder when my daughter broke mine. Incredibly attentive staff. Within short distance of a ton of great attractions. Super accommodating. We had a great visit.
The rooms aren’t huge but plenty of space for my family of four. Especially decent for the price, treatment, and location. Here’s my one “complaint…” the pool could be larger. I have nothing else negative to say.
