Health Insurance California – Insurance in California

California offers a comprehensive health insurance marketplace through Covered California. It’s part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) aiming to provide residents with affordable, quality healthcare options. The state’s marketplace allows individuals and families to compare plans, including metal levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) detailing monthly premiums and out-of-pocket expenses based on income. Enrollment is open year-round, with subsidies available based on income to help reduce premiums and copayments. In 2021, about 7.1 million Californians were covered by plans bought through Covered California. The state also innovates with expanded Medi-Cal for more citizens and a cap on out-of-pocket costs for enrollees. Since its establishment, Covered California has played a critical role in expanding health coverage and reducing California’s uninsured rate, currently around 7-8%.

  1. Health Net’s business practices are either unethical and/or illegal with regard to adjudicating medical claims. Our daughter was born last summer through emergency C-section at a hospital in Chicago out of state. The claim was denied by Health Net in September. The hospital still has not been paid six months later. The HealthNet clerk who we originally worked with this past fall she understands it’s out of state and an emergency birth, but their practice is to deny the claim and send it to the medical group. I asked, it’s out of state and emergency c section birth, why would the medical group be paying this? The clerks response, we deny all claims and send them over to the medical group first for them to review and ultimately will come back to us to then review. It’s not the medical groups responsibility to pay the bill! It’s out of state and emergency surgery and you’re responsible at HealthNet to pay the hospital bill, and that was acknowledged by the clerk. This delay and deny behavior is either unethical or illegal and I’m reporting them this week to the state of California Office of managed care to report either illegal or unethical business practices. Do not use this company. Poor unethical, or illegal business practices. I called the HealthNet claims and adjudication office three times this week to the assigned claim coordinator and left messages each time and also the general claim office left two messages there this week. In total five times this week each time to voicemail. No return call. Health Net is not a responsible company to work with in terms of your family’s health insurance needs.

  2. Health Net over estimated my income and I had to pay back my Federal premium assistance. DHCS reported I received 26 pay period in a year when in fact I only received 24 for that fiscal year. I tired countless times to correct the error, calling, faxing, and emailing. Horrible communication between Covered California, DHCS and customer service department. I am grateful for the opportunity to get health insurance, but this is not what I had in mind. I did not renew.
