Great location, parking can be very tight. Swimming pool is small. I appreciate that room has a microwave and fridge. The rooms were clean. Their free breakfast is great especially when traveling with kids. Pricing online and paying for the hotel may differ. Itās best booking directly with the hotel versus online because they donāt have access to Expedia or booking.com they canāt help you there you would have to deal with those company separately from the hotel staff. Overall the hotel served itās purpose for my family and I. Front desk staff member was great we had called ahead of time to mentioned we were coming in really late for check in and he assured me it will be fine. We arrived around 2am at the hotel and front desk was staff was great.
We had the double queen bed room, and it was quite small (but do-able) for a family of 4 if you just plan to sleep there. There was not much room for you to eat takeout in it. There was smell in the room but it went away once you turned on the ac. The breakfast and free parking were probably the best part of this hotel. There is a big parking lot in front of the lobby area ā itās half empty all the time. Breakfast was better than expected. Given the price that i paid, i didnāt have high expectations. I was just hoping for a clean room to sleep in, nothing fancy. Everything could be cleaner and newer but overall, i feel the hotel meets my expectations.
This hotel is in the perfect location to be able to easily access all of San Diego. We stayed here a week. The rooms were your typical Holiday Inn Express rooms. The set up of the hotel is weird and difficult to navigate at first. Breakfast was decent. There is a great 7-11 right across the street we visited daily for snacks and drinks. The only big complaint I have is the pool. The pictures do not do it justice. It is TINY!!! Like 9 ft by 9 ft. Smallest pool Iāve seen. Iāve stayed at hotels with larger hot tubs than this pool. It definitely isnāt a luxury hotel, but for the price and local it was a good week.
I didnāt want to leave a negative review, but I feel like I have to. I have traveled to more than 7 countries, and Iāve never experienced a hotel like this before. (Iāve traveled to the U.S. as well, but I couldnāt help but think, āAre all hotels in San Diego like this?ā)
I had booked a total of 13 nights, but I couldnāt bear it any longer and left early to find another place to stay.
1. Bugs
A. Suspected Termites
On the second night, I went to Universal Studios in LA and returned to the hotel late at night. When I turned on the light, the room was crawling with strange bugs, as shown in the pictures (they were only on the wooden floor). These bugs were even inside my luggage. I told the front desk, and they moved me to a new room. However, because of the bugs in my luggage, I had to spend the whole night shaking out my clothes and repacking. The next day, I even had to do laundry. Why did I have to repack everything while being so exhausted?
B. Just Ants
The new room they moved me to had ants. When I asked the front desk for bug spray, they said they didnāt have any. So I went to Target and bought three cans of bug spray and had to deal with it myself. There were also dead ants on the walls. Why am I paying for a hotel and still having to do pest control?
-> In the end, I bought a sleeping bag and slept in it! Funny, right?
2. Housekeeping
This hotel only cleans if you specifically request it. Otherwise, they just refill the towels. I understand thatās their policy, but it would be helpful if they had a door hanger for housekeeping requests.
A. No Cleaning, but They Took the Tip
I was so horrified by the bugs in my room that I requested cleaning every day. I even took out the trash myself; all I wanted was fresh bedding. But for three days in a row, they didnāt clean the room, despite my requests. I even asked at the front desk to please clean the room that day, but it didnāt happen. One day, they didnāt even take the used towels or replace them. Why did they take the tip if they werenāt going to clean the room?
B. Staff Response
When I complained about the lack of cleaning, they just said there was no housekeeper available in the evening. I can understand that happening one day, but for three days in a row? I made my request in the morning, but by the evening, the room still wasnāt cleaned. And all they said was, āThereās no housekeeper.ā What am I supposed to do with that? Theyāre playing with me, right? Also, do the staff here not know how to apologize? If they had at least apologized, I wouldnāt be this angry.
3. Room Condition
A. Dust
I have a dust allergy, and this hotel is filthy. Especially the carpet and the bedding. I had hives all night and couldnāt stop scratching. In the end, I had to buy allergy medication and anti-itch cream from Walmart. If you have sensitive skin or children, do not come to this hotel.
B. Smell
The room smells like dust and mold.
C. Itās just dirty.
Good Point: Free parking.
Honestly, I want to give this place negative stars. Iām not a native English speaker, so the whole experience was even harder for me. The bugs and dust made my stay unbearable. I trusted Holiday Inn when I made the reservation, but I am completely shocked and disappointed.
First off this is not a 4/5 star hotel, so letās get that out the way. Initially, the room smelled like cigarette or mildew. Iām not sure if it was the carpet or the linen. We stayed for four days, so it improved, or we got used to the smell. The hotel is close to a lot of places. Coronado Beach, Mission Beach, Legoland, and a plethora of restaurants within fifteen minutes of driving. Thereās a 7-11, McDonaldās and In and Out within walking distance. The hotel staff is awesome. Free breakfast is included. If you go out to eat, youāll appreciate it more. Parking is kind of a hassle, everyone fighting for the few spaces in the court, while there are a lot of free, covered spaces in the back of the hotel. Our bathroom door was swelled and would not close. The pool had a weird layer of foam. Iām not sure what it was, but it deterred us from getting in. Do I recommend staying here? Yes, but if youāre bougie you may want to pay more somewhere else. You get what you pay for $300 for 3/4 nights in San Diego, not a bad deal.
