  1. I feel terrible having to write this review, but feel it is important to that reviews tell both the good and the bad in the experiences people have.

Overall I found the owner Whitney to be really lovely, but I am not impressed with the doulas presented to us, nor the lack of professionalism. You feel like blank check where you have to spend a specific amount to be taken seriously. Most of the interactions with the doulas are curt and dismissive. I felt like I am the problem when the reality is I am simply looking for help and guidance. With a $10K+ I would expect a little more than what I was presented with.

    1. Was asked by a doula in the interview to go into a private contract outside of GGD. Was told they charge more if I accepted through the agency.

    2. Of the 3 doulas I was presented with only 1 cared to reach out. Had to reach out to the other 2 who took a long time to get back to me.

    3. I received 1 sentence responses ” I don’t have experience with twins” from doulas that allegedly were sourced for me based on an extensive form I filled out – where I stated it was for twins.

I see all the other great reviews posted here, so its disappointing to see this. I would have given 1 star but gave 2 for the help Whitney tried to provide in the beginning. It just didn’t carry through to the Doulas she recommended.

  2. Golden Gate Doula Associates is a true blessing to expecting and postpartum parents! We had the absolute joy to have Claudia as our birth doula and the bonus support of Teeya who was finishing up her training and attended my birth ( both of these woman are superheros). What we loved about GGDA was the community of doulas ready to fill in if your doula was unable to make it to your birth. We learned so much from the classes and info sessions and were very welcomed by all of the doulas at any event we attended. My only regret when it comes to GGDA is not hiring a postpartum doula because whew that newborn phase is sweet but soooooo exhausting!

  3. Ask for (doula) Brette Howard! We had the pleasure of working with her in 2023. She is warm, knowledgeable, experienced, and very communicative and responsive. Brette is a mother herself and brings deep empathy, understanding, and commitment to her work. She curated a helpful set of readings and other resources outside our interactions as well. As much as she did to help us prepare during the second and third trimesters, Brette was instrumental at the hospital in mitigating the impact of an unhelpful nurse. I am amazed at how she was able to simultaneously support my wife and myself–with our very different needs and personalities.

  4. Golden Gate Doula Associates and Jen Darwin are absolutely fabulous!! Not only are they extremely responsive, but the personalized care that they provide is top notch!! When putting together a labor and delivery checklist, make sure it includes Jen – she deserves FIVE stars and more for how good she is at her job. The support that she gave to my husband and I during the birth of our second baby DURING COVID is unmatched and I can’t thank her enough for the beautifully positive birth experience that we had.

During our pregnancy, Jen provided my husband and I with the information that we needed to make informed decisions on where we were going to deliver (we switched from CPMC to UCSF at 37 weeks) and how I was going to manage my gestational diabetes. She put me in contact with other women who had GD, which was extremely helpful to understand how the care was being managed at the hospital with COVID. She also met us in person at our home to help prepare us with techniques and equipment to labor at home.

When we arrived at the hospital, Jen met us in the parking lot and escorted us in. If you’ve ever met Jen, you know that her presence is enough to put you at ease and instantly make you feel comfortable and taken care of. With her background, she is extremely knowledgeable on hospital procedures and decision making and walked us through each step as we were being admitted to the hospital.

We ended up delivering in triage because so many babies were being born that night, but we had one of the larger and more spacious rooms all due to Jen and her experience in knowing the hospital layout and in working with the UCSF staff. We also had an unmedicated birth, which would not have been possible had Jen not coached me through each stage and gave me the strength and confidence to keep going. My recovery was quick and easy due in large part to how Jen helped me to prepare before and during labor and delivery.

If you are thinking about getting a doula, look no further – get on her schedule before she fills up!
