  1. I had been given Caroline Day’s name as a potential family practitioner that was taking new patients. I looked on her website and it indicated she was taking new patients. I phoned her office for an appointment. They also told me she was taking new patients and told me where to find the paperwork.

I completed the detailed paperwork and hand delivered it to her office 2 weeks and 1 day ago. They said the turnaround time was 2 weeks but usually took less time. Since it had been over 2 weeks, I gave her office a call. They put me on hold and came back to tell me she had not had time to review it and it would take another week. That was beyond my control and probably her control.

The shock came when her office called me later today to say that she is not taking patients on Medicare. Then it was like she was prompting the clerk because the clerk then changed her tune and said that actually they were not taking any new patients because they had a doctor that was going on Maternity Leave. I had not said a word through all of that so I did mention that 2 weeks ago I was told she was taking new patients. She said well it was a recent change. I said Thank you and good by.

I looked up statistics on doctors taking Medicare and it stated that only 2.9% of doctors do not accept Medicare. This is my personal observation: I am a baby boomer and I am 69. Baby boomers are still turning the age to qualify for Medicare. The number of people on Medicare are going to be greater than ever.

I really felt like I was discriminated against but it seems there is no law to support it.
