  1. Great old and historical resort. President Ford stayed here! Great big rooms. The hallways are high. Don’t forget to go to the shop downstairs. Great pastries and coffee. Service is slow. Leave time to just walk and take it all in.

  2. We enjoyed our time today at the pool. Not only were staff inviting, courteous, informative, but the pool itself was beautiful, and clean. There were plenty of comfy chairs available with or without shade. The food at the poolside grill was delicious and my kids gobbled down their meal. We will definitely head back!

  3. I stayed here for a few nights for a conference, with the cost covered by my funder. This hotel is old but functionally modern, retaining charm and mystique from its antiquacy and reminding many attendees of The Shining. The pools were heated and lovely, with wonderful large changing rooms (although most of the lockers didn’t work). All meals available inside are delicious but expensive, although as mentioned earlier I didn’t have to pay it myself. The location gives the hotel wonderful views over the Bay area and proximity to the Claremont canyon trails which should excite any hiker (wear shoes with good grip as the inclines are steep). Unfortunately it isn’t proximal to much else, it is near the top of a hill in an upmarket residential area. The nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes walk downhill, which doesn’t sound too bad until you carry shopping up the gentle Claremont hill, and then up the less forgiving roads to the hotel proper. The smatterings of commercial activity nearby are worth a visit, including a comic book shop and a sci-fi bookshop. Do not try to walk to the hotel; get a taxi. The staff are peerlessly nice.

The downsides of the hotel mainly concern the rooms. In my bathroom (which was glorious) there were long hairs on the shower walls – not what I’d expected from a hotel of this standard. The biggest issue of all though was the size of the rooms. Myself and other attendees noted that the rooms were really small given the overall grandeur of the hotel. We don’t have much right to complain as our stay was fully covered, but if I was paying $300 myself per night I would be unhappy with the size of the room. I think it is probably easier to see this sizeable fee as being for the hotel’s services and facilities as opposed to the rooms.

  4. Sadly, this is the only hotel in Berkeley that has somewhat of a standard. That said, we are constantly fascinated by how badly run the hotel is. They don’t tell you upon booking if the pool is unusable because of construction or if there is massive scaffolding blocking the view and bringing in a bunch of dust into your $500+ rooms. The Limewood restaurant is nice and well-serviced, though. But other than that, the price-value ratio is off for this hotel but could be easily addressed with good, proactive communication.

  5. My recent stay at Claremont Club & Spa – A Fairmont Hotel left me with mixed feelings. Let me start with the positives – the hotel itself is stunning, with excellent amenities like the gym and pools. The cafe also offers a pleasant atmosphere to unwind.

However, my excitement dwindled when it came to dining experiences. The restaurant and bar were major letdowns. Despite the prime location, the food was sub-par at best. The $30 charcuterie board was a disappointment with its meager assortment of crackers, old jelly, and oversized slices of ham lacking any presentation or authenticity.

Hoping for redemption, we sampled various menu items including shrimp, sliders, and salads, only to find them all lacking in flavor and quality. Service was mediocre at best, indicating a need for management to invest in staff training to uphold the standards expected of a high-class hotel and restaurant.

What truly soured our experience was the pervasive negativity among the staff, from check-in to the bartenders, who openly criticized management even in front of guests. The disjointed ordering system, where a simple coffee order became a hassle of being shuttled between the bar and restaurant, added to the frustration.

As someone who had eagerly anticipated staying at this location for years, it’s disheartening to say that the poor dining experience alone would deter me from returning. It’s a shame that such a beautiful property is let down by its dining offerings.
