California Department of Insurance – Insurance in California

The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is a state government agency responsible for regulating the insurance industry within California. It sets standards for policy coverage, limits premiums, handles consumer complaints, ensures solvency, and licenses insurance agents. With the aim to protect consumers and maintain market stability, the CDI oversees a range of activities including market conduct examinations, financial audits of insurance companies, and disciplinary actions against insurers. By doing so, the CDI upholds consumer confidence in the insurance market and promotes fair competition among providers. Its comprehensive regulatory framework has secured a robust system between insurers and policyholders, operating efficiently in California’s diverse economy.

  1. Welcome to another California service for taxpayer dollars that does not work. Staff is quiet quitting, no help, working for the government to sit at a desk. They do minimal work and collect a paycheck. Supervisor R Lara needs to clean house of these customer service employees that are taking advantage of taxpayer dollars. Unprofessional passive aggressive Supervisor Nancy who seems to partake in quiet quitting. talked over me , would not answer my question directly and then gaslit me when I did not agree with her behavior. It seems they are paid to argue with Californians.

  2. THIS MAY BE THE MAIN OFFICE, NOT SF OR LA.

DO NOT WRITE A LONG ,TIME CONSUMING LETTER, AS IT WILL BE DECLINED; YOU MUST USE THEIR ONLINE “COMPLAINT FORM”.

AAA/CSAA doubled my car insurance because I complained for years about their greatly declining Roadside Assistance Program and their expensive Renter’s Insurance($200/yr) compared to online app Lemonade ($73/yr). So I wrote a long letter and included the papers showing the unjust increase; the letter was declined and I was told last year they only accept their official “complaint form” with excessive security log-in.

So I switched to Liberty Mutual, who also charged me the double rate of AAA, over $700/yr.!!
Insurance companies can not be trusted and must be strongly regulated!

I bought a new car and told Liberty Mutual my 2000 Acura was parked in the garage and locked by clutch lock so only 100miles estimated driving before the soon sale. My new Toyota I might drive up to 15,000 miles/yr.
4 LM agents told me, “I can change that by phone.”
    But they did not!

The 5th LM agent,a woman, said, “that future mileage estimate change must be in writing.” She sent the form buried in 23 pages of policy.
I filled it out and mailed it back.

The 6th LM agent , Bruce Moore, said they had received it in late July2019 and they needed just 3 more days to change my 15August due date bill from $1471.50.
    That was Sunday, 4August 2019.

On Saturday 10August 2019, LM agent Lisa said the bill due was still $1471.50 and they had the new mileage numbers, but had not had an underwriter adjust the cost down yet!

I then talked to LM agent Justin who said, “We have not received your future estimated mileage form in the mail yet.”
    I called him a Liar!
This is what we Californians have to put up with from dishonest greedy insurance companies because of the mandatory car insurance law!

I called back and talked to LM agent Robert Houy who told me, “Yes, we have the form. Your bill is now $1067.50/yr.”
I PAID in full by credit card, even tho I believe they did not reduce the mileage on the old , for sale, garage parked and clutch locked, 2000 Acura Integra type-R to 100 miles as requested!!

I was sent a paper BILL recently for $1046.50 for 12000 miles estimated driving on the old 2000 Acura and 13500 miles on the new Toyota! So I’m paying More for less miles on the old Acura!

So I filled out the online form and sent it to Sacramento.
Let’s see if this office does justice that CPA-BAR and CFPA failed at.

It’s one thing for insurance companies in California to lie to us Citizens- Voters- Consumers. But for them to lie to the State of California’s Dept of Ins and Not be slapped with $1000/$1M fines for lying should not be allowed.

If you too file a complaint with the State of California Department of insurance, you will automatically not be believed, without a Lot of corrborating evidence. And Anything the insurance companies say is treated as Gospel truth even if a total fabrication, because we only vote and pay taxes but most of us don’t give $10,000s in “campaign contributions” under Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, fair warning. The insurance companies are thus favored to win, but we don’t have to like it.
